The Tasman Conversation Group emerged in 2018 following the conclusion of the Lend Lease Springboard Program which was conducted in our community for four years from 2014.  A number of those involved in the various community conversations decided to continue the “conversations” and established the informal but active group.  In particular, the CWA, Lions and Rotary formed the group and were joined by other interested residents. Some residual funds from Springboard acted as seeding finance for our early activities.

A project that had commenced during Springboard was the production of the Community Calendar which has been continued and developed and is a valued reference for our residents and for tourists.  Of particular interest to our citizens is the inclusion of meeting dates, function dates and a comprehensive local directory.  Local photographers vie for the opportunity to have their entries selected for the calendar and Peninsula businesses assist by purchasing advertising space and distributing the calendar.

The group considered a need for creating an opportunity for local residents, shack owners and new residents to get together on a regular basis to form new friendships, personal support mechanisms and to just enjoy time together.  Based on the Rotary club’s highly successful model to support the Murdunna community after the 2013 bushfires, it was decided to conduct a free community barbecue in Nubeena each month.  These have been particularly successful and supported by local businesses and residents who sponsor the cost of the food.

The group has assisted other groups where a need has arisen and have been active in several other activities including improving signage for AED’s in the community and improving information and welcome signage for our tourists.

The group meets on the Thursday after the monthly barbecue, which is held on the first Saturday each month, and is open to anyone in the community interested in continuing the conversation for the benefit of our community.  We have welcomed the involvement and support of the Tasman Council and the ongoing support of Peninsula businesses.  I would be happy to provide further information if required.
