Tasman Voice for Health Community Update – Spring 2023

Who are we?

Tasman Voice for Health is a community group which works to represent community’s needs and perspectives on topics health and wellbeing of people living in the Tasman Municipality.  The Tasman Voice for Health is working on collecting community views about what health services are needed in the area and advocate to government and other decision makers. We also work on community-led projects to improve health and wellbeing in the Tasman Region.

Update on recent happenings:

Roundtable with Tasmanian Minister for Health, Guy Barnett, MP – August 2023 – The Tasman Voice for Health met with Guy Barnett MP to discuss some of the work we have been doing and to talk to him about health issues that are relevant to our region. He was very supportive of our work so far, in particular the Mental Health First Aid Training in the community and is keen to hear more about our work over the next two years.

Women’s Health Week – September 2023 – Tasman Voice for Health supported the Eaglehawk Neck film society with their screening of Seriously Red for Women’s Health Week. As well as the film there was a shared meal as well as a Women’s Health Quiz and information sheets about the important health screening tests for women through the lifespan.

Mental Health First Aiders Peer Support Group Meeting – September 2023 – Some of the community members who were involved in the MHFA training met to debrief and support each other. TVH is seeking funding for further opportunities to support MHFA trained people in our community through further training in self-care, debriefing, active listening and more.

Mental Health Week Events – Tasman Voice for Health received a grant from the Mental Health Council of Tasmania to:

  • Hold a stall at the Nubeena Bee Festival (7th Oct, Civic Centre Nubeena) where we will:
    • run activities to ‘map’ the way our local community looks after their mental health and wellbeing
    • find out what we need to make this better
    • have community conversations about mental wellbeing

Coming up:

  • Mental Health Week Film Night (6pm, 28th October, EHN Hall). Screening of a Man Called Otto, with a shared meal and Mental Health themed quiz (prizes to be won!)
  • Talking to the U3A and other key groups about Tasman Connect and learning more about problems older people on the Tasman face when accessing services and health information
  • Continuing to build our working relationship with the Multi-Purpose Service, providing feedback, advice and support.
  • A series of Kitchen Table conversations with key groups who might have different or specific needs around health (eg. Isolated older people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Young people).
  • Planning a workshop with key local service providers to share the learnings of the Tasman Connect project so far.
